Making it big in the Asian music scene isn’t easy, which is probably why local star Sing Shi Xin Hui has ventured to Taiwan to make it big there.
By Cheryl Zhang
After garnering our attention at Project Superstar in 2005, Sing (then known as Shi Xin Hui) has gone on to greater things such as being voted by as one of the top five Asian pop personalities by The Straits Times in 2003 and winning the Best Newcomer award at Singapore Hits Award 2007. But that was almost three years ago. So, what has she been up to since then?

Q: Hey Sing, we hear you’ve ventured to Taiwan. Can you share some memorable experiences with us?
A: One of the best experiences I’ve had in Taiwan is definitely meeting the people there. All the Taiwanese I’ve come into contact with are friendly and appreciative. My support team members are awesome – they show me so much care and attention, I feel like a princess! Working with other artistes is also always memorable. Before becoming a singer, I never imagined that one day, I’d be able to meet these people and work with them. They were just digital images on my TV!

Q: What would you define “success” to be in the Taiwanese market?
A: To me, it’s being able to sing at a sold-out concert alongside my idol Aaron Kwok!

Q: What do you miss about Singapore when you’re in Taiwan?
A: I miss the clean air of Singapore! When you're in the middle of an urban area in Taiwan, you definitely notice the difference.
Q: So who are some people you miss?
A: Call me heartless, but it's my cats I miss the most! [laughs] But of course I do miss my family and friends as well.
Q: Besides singing, what else have you been up to?
A: I collaborated with Carlo Rino to help create their Pawfect Friendship collection.

Q: Wow that’s another feather to add to your hat of accomplishments! What was the experience like?
A: Everyone at Carlo Rino was very helpful throughout the project. They were very supportive of my ideas. I think it takes a bit of courage to go for a project like this, cos it’s not common to incorporate pet styling with high-street bags. I really appreciate how Carlo Rino was willing to take on this idea and make it a reality. With this, we will be able to raise awareness of cats, and this is an issue that’s always been very important to me.
Q: It seems like you really love cats! Tell us about your relationship with them.
A: I got my first cat four years ago, but I’ve been feeding stray cats since I was young. It’s difficult to say why I love them – I guess they just capture my imagination. All cats have very distinctive personalities – some are mischievous, others are warm and caring. They're always interested in what you're doing and make great life companions. Sometimes they can be quite a nightmare, but other times, they really bring a sparkle to your eyes. Falling in love with them is the most rewarding relationship I’ve had!
Q: Which is your favourite piece from Carlo Rino?
A: Furry Ally #1. I'm a big bag-girl at heart. I can throw my life into it and know I’ll be prepared for whatever comes my way.

Q: Besides loving big bags, what else constitutes your fashion style?
A: I'm probably from the "dark side" of fashion. [Laughs] Black is my favourite colour and I'm always wearing it. I also like clean lines and darker colours. I like keeping things simple but smart. I don’t need to wear flashy outfits – all I need is a pair of awesome high heel shoes, and I’ll feel like a million bucks!
Q: If you weren’t a performing artiste now, what would you be?
A: I guess I'd be a pedigree cat breeder. That way, my work would also be my passion.
