My gums sometimes start to bleed when I’m brushing my teeth. Should I be concerned and what can I do about it? – Leena, 22 PDF Print E-mail

There are several reasons why your gums bleed when you brush them. You could be:

  • applying too much pressure when brushing
  • brushing horizontally (from left to right) rather than from up to down
  • using a toothbrush with too-tough bristles
  • brushing too often – twice a day is recommended
  • flossing the wrong way
  • having an infection
  • suffering from sensitive gums/gingivitis/a vitamin K deficiency

Make sure you’re using the right technique to brush your teeth. Instead of pressing hard and applying too much pressure, use the tip of the bristles to brush your teeth. You can also try Omron’s Sonic Style toothbrushes, which use a “bristle tip swing technology”. This improves vertical and horizontal bristle tip movement by up to 200 percent, thus removing more plaque with less damage to the gums.
