My friends and I love to hang out and smoke shisha. Is this less dangerous than smoking cigarettes? Esther, 19 PDF Print E-mail

Originating from the middle east, shisha has seen a rise in its popularity over the last few years. A shisha is a waterpipe and inside this, flavoured tobacco is partially burned. The smoke generated then passes through the water stored in the waterpipe before you inhale it through attached pipes. The smoke inhaled is similar to aroma from aromatherapy oils.

The flavours available can range from cola, liquorice and even apple.

Unfortunately, shisha is still dangerous, and even more harmful than smoking cigarettes. When the tobacco is burnt using charcoal, it produces high levels of carbon monoxide and cancer-causing chemicals than conventional cigarettes.

Contrary to popular belief, even when the smoke passes through the water, the harmful substances are not absorbed. In addition, because people tend to use shisha smoking to socialise, the one hour you spend in a shisha parlour will result in you inhaling 100 to 200 times the amount of smoke produced by a single cigarette.
