My boyfriend and I have been together for several years, but now I just feel bored when he talks– should we break up? – Rena, 24 PDF Print E-mail

There are many reasons for feeling bored about your ex and not all of them should result in an end to a relationship.

Reason #1: Your love has faded: When we first fall in love, we usually feel a rush of love, which usually doesn’t last for long. Once that is over, you may see who that person really is, and find that you’re simply not compatible. If this is the case, then it could be a legitimate reason for calling things off.

Reason #2: You’re acting on defence: What this means is your mind doesn’t want to deal with anger, disappointment or hurt so you block the emotions and end up feeling bored. This can go on for years and years, so iron out your issues and find out whether you both want to grow together or wilt together.

Reason #3: It could be a symptom: Depression comes in many forms and can lead to apathy or lack of happiness in the things that used to give you joy. If you suffer from depression, you may suffer from dynamic engagement with your life, which can look a lot like being bored. If you suspect this is your situation, you’ll need to tell your partner how you feel so that he can help you out.
