I’ve just graduated but I still haven’t found a job – what should I do to increase my chances of scoring an interview? – Si yuan, 22 PDF Print E-mail

Unless you’re one of the lucky few who has already gotten a job, college graduation can be a scary time - you’ve suddenly gone from being a student to unemployed. Here’s how you can increase your chances of scoring a job.

Do something useful with your time
Looking for a job can be painful – but it doesn’t mean you should waste your time. While you’re hunting for opportunities, try to pursue your own venture in a field on hobby of your interest. If you’ve always liked jewellery making, or writing or building website, but never had the time to do it, now’s the time to try it out – after all, you never know what your venture might become.

Look to smaller comapnies
It’s likely that your school has a recruitment centre that has strong ties with bigger, more established companies, but there’s always a possibility that you’re not a right fit for these positions. Look beyond your school’s recruitment centre, and at smaller growing companies. These companies may be looking for talent, but may not have been around long enough to establish ties with your school career centre.

Broaden your network
You may be young, but your network may be bigger than you think. Attend meet-ups and event in industries that appeal to you. You’ll have to be careful about your intention for finding a job, but have fun. It’s unlikely you’ll score a job at these events, but you may meet someone with connections to a great entry-level position.  Try to absorb as much as you can by talking to recruiters, even if their companies or open positions aren’t what you’re looking for.
