I’ve been told that I’m too quiet for my own good – how can I be more assertive in the workplace without being aggressive? – Tara, 24 PDF Print E-mail

Being more assertive doesn’t mean that you become more aggressive, it just means your communication style becomes more effective. Here are some tips to help you achieve it.

Decide what’s important to you and set your boundaries
Being assertive doesn’t mean you have to say ‘no’ to everything just to sound tougher. Before you say ‘no’, you have to decide what you want to achieve. The greater clarity you have on what you want, the easier it is for you to get it. It’s really all about picking your battles wisely.

Don’t tolerate anything that stands between you and your goals
Identify what are the obstacles that prevent you from reaching perfection and satisfaction at work, and decide that you want to stop putting up with, taking on or accepting any of them anymore.

Ask for what you want
Now that you’re clear about what you want, state your intention clearly by using ‘I’ statements in a firm tone. For example “I would like to discuss my working hours’ or “I’m feeling frustrated am unclear about my responsibilities in the office.”

Just go for it
Decide to stop letting fear of what others think or want control you. Instead of asking “What if?”, start telling yourself “It’s time for me start going for what I want.”
