I just scored an interview for my dream job at a fashion clothing store – what should I wear to the interview? – Jerene, 23 PDF Print E-mail

What you should wear to an interview in the fashion industry definitely would be different than what you would wear in the corporate world. However, before you break out into the world with fancy outfits and accessories, here are a few things you should consider:

1. Look clean and smart:
As with any job interview, first impressions are everything and you have to look professional. Make sure your outfit looks well put together. The key is to be able to look like you fit in – the general rule is to make sure you can be seen in a serious meeting. You can wear pumps or flats, if you are not comfortable in heels then don’t wear them.

2. Less is more
The usual rules apply here as well – don’t show too much skin, wear closed toe shoes and avoid sleeveless tops and dresses. Even though this is a fashion interview, this isn’t the time to show off the trendiest pieces in your wardrobe. Start with the piece of clothing you think best showcases your style and incorporate it into your interview outfit and throw on a casual blazer to add professionalism. Feel free to add on simple accessories to highlight your style.

3. Don’t distract your interviewer
You may think that your pink cat-winged sunglasses scream character more than anything else, but an interviewer may think otherwise. Don’t risk losing a job opportunity if people can’t see beyond those sunglasses.

4. Make sure one item is trend-worthy
To show them that you’re serious about the job and you’re doing your homework, make sure one item of your outfit is seasonally trendy.
