I’m heading to Bangkok next week and I intend to do fill my luggage with cheap buys – what can I do to sharpen my bargaining skills? – Gina, 23 PDF Print E-mail

There’s always a sense of fulfilment when you get something for much less than the asking price. It doesn’t have to be difficult - when it comes to the art of negotiating, what you need is a little determination and some magic lines.

Pick your battles wisely
Know what stores are willing to haggle with you and which products to haggle on. Don’t waste time haggling over a dollar – you might end up spending four hours haggling only to have saved four dollars.

You’re interested – just not that much
Making comments like “Hmm I’m not sure yet” indicates you’re interested, but you could always do without it – you’re just waiting for a goodie to sweeten the deal. Walking away may even entice the seller to be more amendable to your terms.

Pick the right time
Sellers have more time to talk to you at the beginning or every end of the day. You’re also likely to get a better deal at the start of the day since most sellers like to start the day with a good sale.

Don’t show your frustration
You stand a much better chance of getting your way if you are a happy shopper rather than an angry shopper. If you don’t like the deal that the seller is offering just walk away.
