My nails are really brittle and dry! Is there anything I can use to solve this? – Jenna, 28 PDF Print E-mail

Lack of keratin can cause your hair and nails to lose their vitality and strength. Due to this, your nails can get brittle and discoloured. Brittle nails can also be caused by other factors such as:

• Long-term exposure to moisture or nail polish

• Fungus or yeast

• Bacterial infection

• Kidney or liver disease

You could try the new Foltene Nail Treatment, which can help solve your brittle nail dilemma. Formulated to combat brittle nails, simply apply Foltene Nail Treatment over your cuticles to instantly condition and add moisture.

The product contains:

• Tricalgoxyl, a patented ingredient previously used only in anti hair loss treatments and is now formulated to combat brittle nails and grow out sparse brows, lashes and facial hair (for the men!) in just two weeks.

• A hydrating and nourishing agent made with amino acids, allantoin and rosa centifolia extract to help preserve the natural elasticity of nails and restore lost shine All Foltene treatments have been dermatologically tested for use on sensitive eyes and skin. Available at Watsons, Sasa, Robinsons and John Little at $48 each.

I heard from older generation that rubbing your nails with garlic helps to make your nails strong. x) you can also use ginvera olive oil to keep them shiny and moisturized.

For nails, use nail oil. It will moisturise the nails and strengthen them. Do not apply nail polish or it will make your nails even brittler.

If you get hangnails or loose skin down the side of the nail, trim it off with sharp scissors to reduce the risk of the skin tearing or infections getting into the skin.

Always apply a base coat before nail polish, it protects your nails from getting damaged from the nail polish. Use good quality base coat daily.

A lack of folic acid, vitamin C, calcium and omega-3 can lead to dry nails. Eat more food of these nutritions.

You can try applying hand and nail cream (clarins has such a product) and then wear gloves (you can get it from bodyshop) overnight to lock the moisture in and at the same time, it aids the absorption of the product. (:
