I used to be on the swim team back in school and I have really broad and athletic shoulders. What should I be wearing to minimise the way they look? – Joanne, 26 PDF Print E-mail

First of all, having broad, athletic shoulders isn’t such a bad thing.

Take a look at celebrities like Jessica Biel who has a really strong set of shoulders. She looks great in just about anything from halter gowns to strapless dresses. However, if you’re more comfortable with hiding them, then choose clothes with sleeves that are cut generously.

Avoid structured suits and blazers, or anything with shoulder pads for that matter. You also want to draw attention away from the area, so off-shoulder tops and cap sleeves are out of the question.

Wear vertical stripes which downplay the appearance of full shoulders.  You can also lengthen the way your body looks by wearing an entire outfit in the same colour. Darker tones will also help achieve this look.  To top it all off, get a cut that draws the attention away from your shoulders.

Short hair that doesn't hit the shoulders is a good choice. Or go for the other extreme, long flowy locks that end away from your shoulders.

I think toned shoulders are really sexy! Bring attention to your boobs and arms with tank tops or v-necks so your shoulders don't standout.
