Working for two different bosses can be difficult, but it’s becoming increasingly inevitable. Here’s how you can work effectively with both bosses:

Communicate

Make sure your bosses are aware of what you’re doing. Find out what their communication styles are - know whether they prefer casual or in-person updates or a weekly memo which lists your projects. When you are given a task, find out why it’s important, what the expectations are regarding the results and when it’s due. Also find out what kind of updates they’d appreciate knowing about.

Let your bosses help you prioritize

Your bosses may not realize how much work you’re actually doing, or how urgent they are. So if you’re feeling unsure about what to do first, ask your bosses to clarify priorities.

Get feedback

If you don’t regularly get feedback, consider asking for an all-round feedback on a monthly or quarterly basis, or after each project.

Stay organized

Having more bosses will probably mean that you’ll get different questions about where you stand on different projects. Make sure you have a really organized system which works for you, and stick to it. Keep an electronic calendar and keep it updated.
