I can’t seem to stop myself from overspending at every sale I come across – what can I do to control myself? – Grace, 23 PDF Print E-mail

The easy answer would be to not go to a sale. But then again, even if you don’t head out, there’s a whole load of shopping that can be done online. So here’s how you can keep your vice in check.

1.      Don’t buy immediately
When you see something you like, walk away and spend at least one night considering whether its truly worth a buy before purchasing it. Chances are, you’ll probably find that it really isn’t that worth your money anyway.

2.      Do it just like riding a bike
When starting to exercise self control, don’t beat yourself up for falling off the bike. Get on it and try again.

3.      Carry a different type of money
There has been research to suggest that the type of money you carry can affect the way you spend. Using bigger notes requires you to make the extra effort of having to change your money into smaller notes, or having to wait for someone to return you the cash – and these extra effort deter you from making a quick purchase. So if you’re a big spender on small items, avoid carrying smaller notes. But if you’re a spender who makes larger purchases on impulse, replace larger notes with a smaller amount of money in smaller notes

4.      Be specific about your goals
You know that your goal is to save more money, so you don’t break your account. But that isn’t specific enough. You need to be sure about how much you want to save, and over how long a period. If you are not specific enough, you will allow yourself space for excuses to overspend.

5.      Think about someone with lots of self control
Studies show that self control is actually contagious, so put your thoughts on someone who is financially dependable.

Also refrain from using NETS to pay because you will tend to ignore the budget and just aim for below the amount in your bank !

A method that I use to not overspent is to bring two wallets - one for my spending, and one for emergencies. This is so that I can set a budget and don't overspend on sales.
