I feel restless and unenergetic when I’m having my period - is there a way that I can boost up my energy levels? – Sarah, 22 PDF Print E-mail

We feel tired during our periods because our estrogens levels dip. To keep yourself energised during this period, you should never stop exercising and up your metabolism levels which will ensure your energy levels remain up and constant.

Other than exercising, you’ll want to eat right. Unlike the junk food that is digested quickly, healthier foods take a longer time get broken down due to their complex carbs and proteins. This gives you more mileage for your energy intake. Here’s some natural foods that are great boosters:
    1. Whole grains: Your body absorbs whole grains slower. This gives you a stable, constant level of sugars in your body; that way you won’t suffer a sudden dip of energy.
    2. Nuts: Especially hazelnuts, cashews and almonds. They contain magnesium and research has found that a lack of magnesium drains your energy levels.
    3. Lean meats: These are healthy sources of protein that allows your brain to release feel good chemicals into your body. You’ll feel alert and focused. But be careful! Don’t use unhealthy cooking methods like deep-frying to prepare your lean meats.
    4. Citrus fruits: They contain a high amount of fiber and it slows down your digestion of carbs. This makes sure that you get a steady stream of energy during the day.
    5. Water: Beware of dehydration! It slows down your metabolism and zaps away your energy. Plus, water does wonders for our skin!

Eat more food that contain iron. Like fish. Also, eat more meat to help replenish the loss of blood.
