I was surprised to find a friend request from my boss via Facebook. Should I accept? – Georgina, 23 PDF Print E-mail

Eileen Chieng, Head of Marketing, http://www.jobstreet.com.sg says:

Before deciding on what your options are, take a minute to consider the office culture.  Do the rest of your colleagues add your boss on Facebook? Are you working for a company where the entire office is connected to Facebook?

Option 1: You can ignore the request but this may seem like you have something to hide.  Counter this by explaining exactly why you do not wish to add him or her.

Option 2: Redirect the invite to LinkedIn instead.  This is to tell your boss that you want to maintain professional relationship. This shows that you’re not ready to open up entirely to your boss but open to a professional friendship on social media.

Option 3: you may strip your Facebook profile right down to the bare minimal so that you are confident that your boss and your colleagues will be anything that will put you in danger of your job.

According to Patrice-Anne Rutledge, a social networking expert and author of "The Truth About Profiting from Social Networking”, there are some advantages to connecting with your boss and your colleagues on Facebook as the online engagements may help you find common interests with your them,  allowing you to get to know them better.
By the looks of it, Facebook is here to stay and if you wish to avoid a fatal collision between your work life and your private life, then use the new features on Facebook to your advantage and choose to show only selected content to people whom you trust.

Just accept if not he will think you have something to hide. Change privacy settings or be mindful of what you post

If your boss sent you a friend request, then there must be a reason for him or her sending it--maybe he/she wants to know you better. I would recommend accepting the friend request, but adjusting the privacy settings just so that your private life would not affect your reputation and your boss's opinions of you in your career life.
